Three fellow prison inmates charged in the brutal bludgeoning death of James (Whitey) Bulger, the wily and charismatic Boston gangster who had evaded a federal dragnet for 16 years, have agreed to a plea deal, according to a filing by federal prosecutors in West Virginia on Monday. Fotios Geas, Paul J. DeCologero and Sean McKinnon faced murder and conspiracy charges after Mr. Bulger, 89, was found beaten to death in his cell in 2018, just hours after being transferred from a Florida lockup where he had been serving two consecutive life sentences for his role in 11 murders. The details of the agreement were not disclosed. In a three-page motion, prosecutors said that the three men had agreed to “cooperate” with the government in preparing a report specifying the circumstances of Mr. Bulger’s killing at the Hazelton federal prison in Bruceton Mills, W.Va.Prison officials had quickly identified Mr. Geas as a suspect in the immediate aftermath of the attack. After a four-year investigation, prosecutors said Mr. DeCologero, a Boston-area gang leader, also took an active role in battering Mr. Bulger, while Mr. McKinnon served as a lookout.

CNN —Disease detectives in Chicago say they have been seeing a worrisome trend: Patients complaining of unusual symptoms like vision and eye problems, headaches and hearing loss or dizziness caused by the sexually transmitted infection syphilis. More than two-thirds of these patients (68%) lacked typical syphilis symptoms, like a rash or chancre sore, that might tip doctors off to the infection. Syphilis cases are surging across the US. In 2022, there were more than 207,000 syphilis cases reported, the highest number since the 1950s, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “There could just be an increase in untreated or inadequately treated patients, which is leading to more severe outcomes of syphilis,” Nham said.

Hollywood writers are entering their third month on strike. Film and TV writers say they're among those who have fared the worst as their industry has been remade, even as others reap the rewards. Either way, the bottom line is this: Everyone in Hollywood is afraid that the robots are coming for their jobs, Terminator-style. Now, they're some of the dominant forces controlling new content development in the entertainment industry. In baking temperatures, the 20-year-old had too much firepower for his wily Australian opponent as he claimed his first grasscourt title in impressive fashion. Alcaraz then broke serve in the following game before wrapping up the set on serve. While Novak Djokovic remains the favourite to retain his Wimbledon title, Alcaraz will be the top seed at the tournament, where he reached the fourth round last year. As well as Nadal, several other players in recent times have gone on to win Wimbledon after conquering Queen's Club, including Andy Murray in 2013 and 2016, Pete Sampras in 1995 and 1999, and Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.

In the run-up to the first round of voting, Erdogan’s interior minister, Süleyman Soylu, tellingly likened the election to the 2016 attempted coup. Off the back of Erdogan’s win, we can expect Turkey to draw even closer to Russia, which supplies more than one-third of its petroleum and oil products. So look for Erdogan to follow whatever geopolitical path benefits his Russian patron, including continued opposition to Sweden joining NATO. Erdogan’s economic policies have contributed to horrific inflation: over 80% in October, a 24-year record, and still at 44% last month. For all his bluster about modernizing Turkey, Erdogan has created an environment of fear, hostility and economic hardship.
